Take public to the streets, by all means except the motor
We are the world that we imagine, and our vision can be made real
The Age of the Bicycle will be upon us!
as we move Towards Carfree Cities.
The choice is Live Free or Drive,

We choose to ride en mass!

June is Bike month in Vancouver. On the last Friday of every June, thousands of people take the the streets - all of whom, in some form or another, want to raise awareness of bicycling as an alternative form of transportation.

you are invited to come with us and enjoy the safety and comfort that we create by simply riding together. families too! dress us, bring sidewalk chalk, bring musical instruments, or just be part of the fun.

Indeed, there were many costumes, instruments and families abound, along with a 50 or 60 cars stuck behind the "corkers" (those bicyclists who prevent cars from driving into the mass of riders) along my street alone.  Although it took a few minutes for the honking to subside, the drivers looked relatively apathetic, with their cheeks in hand, watching onwards.

Critical mass is celebrated worldwide on the last Friday of every month.  According to wikipedia, the first demonstration occurred more than 15 years ago in San Francisco on Sept 25, 1992.

Please share your photos and experiences of Vancouver critical mass, bicycling in urban environments, etc.

I remember the very first critical mass (!!!), hearing it reported on the radio when I was just starting university. Despite its name, it wasn't as big as many had hoped, but it continued to grow and grow, and eventually spread around the world.

Thanks for using my photos.  Critical Mass happens on the last Friday of every single month.  June usually has the biggest turnout because the weather is good and it's bike month.
