Vancouver in the lead up to 2010 (dtes.mp3)

In the lead up to the 2010 Winter Olympics, poverty and housing in Vancouver's downtown eastside has become headline news across Canada. As militant protesters disrupt Olympic events and gain international attention by their actions, government and organizers for the games are left to figure how to effectively deal with these issues before the world begins to take notice.

Now with wealthy land speculators buying up property in the neighbourhood and converting it to tourist use and new condo developments, this is causing even more resentment and anger among downtown eastside residents who already fear a housing shortage.

Freelance journalist Adam Bemma spent time in Vancouver and gained access to residents and community leaders to document how they're coping with this change.
