A pretty one sided piece from the Vancouver Courier on the problems of the downtown east side.

This weekend Vancouverites head to the polls to choose our next mayor. On most issues, both candidates-NPA Coun. Peter Ladner and Vision Vancouver hopeful Gregor Robertson-sing off the same song sheet.

But what about the Downtown Eastside? Our city's ugly blight. Our six blocks of shame. Our little election's Iraq war.

NOTE:   Peter Ballard of the Courier is an active supporter of Peter Ladner's campaign.

One thing is for sure....what's been tried has clearly failed and done so miserably.  More tax money will only employ more staff in the poverty industry who's vested interests are ensuring their own employment by "managing" those with addictions.  Our public policy statement regarding drugs should be to get people off dangerous addictive drugs as the main goal.  Preventing the spread of this addiction beyond the DTES should come second.  For those that do not want to quit we should have resources available when they hit bottom and decide they want to get clean.  Healthier junkies is not a fall-back position acceptable to most Vancouverites.

To little to late !  Affordable places to live and rehab programs is whats needed. Shelters are not the answer !  Provide for the homeless go after the dealers . These dealers sell drugs and hot gods and contribute to the DTES problems in a big way. Are laws need to get stricter, more jails are needed. Get the criminals of the street.  The DTES has a long way to go. The politicians do a lot of talking but very little action.
