Verizon to Test 4G in Boston & Seattle: Way Faster Porn Downloads

Verizon will test its new 4G data transfer protocol in Boston and Seattle. According to The Verizon Guy, 4G will be able to compete with consumer-grade broadband in terms of speed, which is good, I mean, I guess, assuming that data plans get cheaper... otherwise we'll all just hit our monthly caps that much faster. Meanwhile, AT&T (they of the iPhone) are at least a year away from testing anything like 4G. They dedicated too many resources towards hosing their iPhone customers.

The technology, called Long-Term Evolution (LTE), is acompetitor to WiMax. Both will allow you to download all that porn and play Line Rider on your mobile, and both tout themselves as able to replace your home Internet connection.

Cable companies aren't afraid, though. Of course, phone companies refused to accept that mobile phones would ever replace landlines, but it's happening! It's happening right now! Of course, that's only because mobile phone use has become (relatively) affordable- it'd have to get cheaper still to even begin to threaten home data service.

Mike Sievert, Clearwire’s chief commercial officer, said that many users have unplugged their wired Internet providers, and use the Clearwire service as their only broadband source.

Will 4G work with your exisiting phone? Nope!
You'll have to go out and buy new stuff. I bet Nokia, Samsung, and all the other handset providers are cackling madly already.

Verizon Wireless will not say what it plans to charge for the new service, or reveal the speeds it will provide consumers. News of 4G’s debut cities came in a Verizon Wireless conference call for investors on July 27, and the company said it is not yet ready to speak publicly about it.
