YouTube and Universal have announced a partnership to launch a new music video site called Vevo that is expected to go live later this year.

The site will debut with videos straight from Universal's extensive artist catalog.

But, as YouTube is already home to nearly every video (let alone music vid) in the known universe, why create an entirely new site like Vevo just for music clips?

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

In an announcement Thursday, the companies say the site will launch with the entire catalog of music videos from Universal. That's the world's largest recording company and a unit of France's Vivendi SA.

YouTube is owned by Google.

The companies will share ad revenue on the site Vevo.com, as well on a Vevo channel on YouTube.
