NP Rank:
Violence in the Lower Mainland
Violence in the Lower Mainland has escalated over the month of March. While most of the violence is a continuation of the gang warfare, even innocent victims are being caught in the wave of violence.
Earlier this week in the evening, a Simon Fraser University student was walking through the Surrey Central area towards the SFU campus. He was approached by a man, who pulled out a knife and threatened the student, instructing him to hand over his bag. The student had his laptop and wallet in his bag, and refused to give them up.
He eventually gave the man his cell phone, which seemed to satisfy the man who then ran off with the stolen item.
This trend of violence in the Lower Mainland has been ongoing for over a month.
-Tuesday, March 3 - Two people were killed at separate locations. A woman was shot in a luxury penthouse in Burnaby, and a man was shot in his vehicle in Vancouver.
-Wednesday, March 4 - CBC reported 2 men were shot at a Surrey gas station. One man was shot in the leg, and the other was shot in the head. Both men were admitted to a hospital.
-Saturday, March 14 - The Victoria Times Colonist reported a Langley woman was shot dead. Police arrived on the scene after hearing of the shots fired around 5AM that morning.
-Wednesday, March 18 - Two teens were stabbed in the Guildford area. Their injuries were non-life-threatening, but they were admitted to hospital.
-Thursday, March 19 - A 33-year-old man was shot on the Surrey/Langley border. It is not confirmed that the shooting was gang related, but the man appeared to be targeted.
Not all of the incidents are gang related. Even a random student was threatened.
The community is wondering when the violence will stop and when action will be taken against street violence.

I think the police need better tools to deal with these rising issues. They couldnt even track down the phone from the student whom it was robbed from.

Yes, the gun violence is certainly happening more than previous years. Better policing is needed and I hope this does not happen in the 2010 Olympic and at my school...
