The Virgin Mobile Festival 2009 has been coined Virgin Mobile FreeFest and moved to the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.  Concert attendees will now be able to see the Virgin Mobile Festival star line-up - including Weezer, Blink-182 and Franz Ferdinand - for free.

Tickets to FreeFest 2009 will be available online at Ticketmaster on June 27th. Ticketmaster will waive service charges for FreeFest 2009 attendees who pick up their tickets from the Merriweather Post Pavillion or the 9:30 Club in Washinton DC. 35,000 tickets are available.

In contrast, tickets to the 2008 Virgin Mobile Fest cost $100 and 60,000 people attended the festival, which was held at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

“In a time of economic challenges and daily sacrifices, we wanted to throw a fantastic party so people could let loose and have a great time — on us,” said Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, in a statement. “Virgin Mobile FreeFest offers music fans a brilliant day of fun and music and a chance for them to give back to those even less fortunate.”

Virgin Mobile hopes that concert-goers will give back with a donation of $5 to youth homeless shelters.
