Watch given to the officers in the People’s Liberation Army who helped quell the Tiananmen Square uprising on June 4, 1989. On this date the Chinese People’s Liberation Army sent troops into the square using live fire to disperse the crowd and thousands of protesters were killed. Each soldier participating in the operation was given one of these watches. The stainless steel watch features a profile of a soldier’s head as well as the word Beijing and the date of the protest, “89.6,” in addition to Chinese characters.
