Watching the Watchmen - movie review
Seeing is believing: the 1986 book that was published in 12 separate issues is acclaimed as the best graphic novel of all time. That being said the pressure for anyone attempting to adapt it to film would have a big challenge satisfying the fans. Director and visionary Zack Snyder took that challenge and has successfully triumphed under that pressure as he turned Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' brilliant comics series into a 'must see' sci-fi superhero movie!
Watching the Watchmen at 2 hours 43 minutes, the faithful movie adaptation of the graphic novel held my interest to the very end. Alan Moore, the co-creator and writer expressed that one cannot do an accurate film version of the mini series because it is too layered and the story-boards too detailed..
the sold out movie audience, however, was satisfied with the successful interpretation as they all applauded at the end of last night's movie screening.
At first it seemed that all the movie marketing hype was about the male frontal nudity and large glowing blue penis of Dr. Manhattan's character played by Billy Crudup who was artificially CGI recreated for the role. The only superhero with superpowers the Dr. Manhattan character experiences an accident in an intrinsic field subtractor at his quantum physics laboratory that allows him to recreate himself back into an omnipotent earthly existence where he views the world from a subatomic level with the ability to teleport and perceive human issues in a metaphysical way. Struggling somehow to maintain some humanity, the glowing blue superhero finds no need for clothing and spends most of his time onscreen in full frontal nudity as the movie taps into our human nature from his unique hyperconsciousness perspective of the physical world.
Toronto native Malin Akerman plays the sexy latex covered Silk Spectre character and Dr. Manhattan's lover. Malin's character finds it difficult to hold Dr. Manhattan's love-making interest as the superhero exists in a quantum and therefore has the ability to be in several places at once. Based in an alternate parallel reality version of the world in mid 1980's New York, the movie portrays how our world may face a nuclear holocaust and total planetary annihilation. As the main plot-line unfolds the love story crisis between the two takes them off of Earth leaving the world undefended or rather defended only by the human psyche that seems to be easily manipulated by the evil doers.
With catastrophic consequences and graphic bloody killing sprees, the frequent male nudity portrayed on the big screen was not the only reason the movie was given an 18+ Adult rating.
Watchmen is a fantastic film achievement and diehard fans will not be disappointed at the accuracy of the comic book adaptation to the silver screen; also check your local listings for the IMAX theatre version!

Yes thanks for no spoilers! I think I am going to see it even though I know nothing about the graphic novel - I had no idea it was so long however! Good piece!

Hmm, well it does sound rather interesting. Guess I'd missed the human interest pieces on the use of nudity in the movie. But, if nothing else, the movie always sounded interesting, despite never having read the comic books.
Thanks for the update.

thanks so much! glad you like my Watchmen film review
with the daylights saving time-change (taking place yesterday at midnight) we lost that hour 'during' the film viewing which amplified my movie experience because I really did feel that I had entered an alternate reality when we left the theatre ; )

I like scifi flix but I promised my niece I will take her to see witch mountain, I think it is a old disney movie remake, but it has the "Rock" in it one of my favorite entertaining wrestlers. "You know what the Rock's smoking." I real never got that saying it just sounded cool. But I will keep in line to watch the "watching the watch men" 2:43 min. I maybe squirming in my seat some not because of the exitement, but' hopefully it is. I can't sit still that long gerneral with out sleeping.

Thanks for the thought that went into exploring the depth of the film and its visual impact, without ruining the movie itself. Excellent review.

Terrific Review, Tomitheos! I am a fan of the graphic novel and was not disappointed by the movie. It was all I could hope for. Not compromising on Dr. Manhattan's frontal nudity was a good decision by the film's producers. It was tactfully done in both book and movie. The film worked well on multiple levels. Thanks for fine review.

I would only watch the movie for Silk Spectre who is absolutely gorgeous in her Syren made latex costume.
