On August 31, 2009, the Walt Disney Company announced that it would purchase Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. On December 31 they finalized the deal. In-between those two dates, Warner Bros launched DC Entertainment. Although WB has owned DC Comics since 1969 and has been making movies and TV shows since the `70s, they never fully realized the potential. Even throughout the `00s, with the success of movies adapted from Marvel Comics, they couldn't look beyond Batman and (to a lesser extent) Superman.

That is about to change. In the next few weeks, WB and DC Entertainment will make an announcement that will give Disney and Marvel a run for its money.

First up, there's what we already know. A third installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman series is currently in development with Jonah Nolan and David Goyer working on the screenplay. Pre-production is expected to begin in the Fall. Meanwhile, Green Lantern, directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and starring Ryan Reynolds begins production in March for a June 17, 2011 release date.

Now on to the rumors. Christopher Nolan has been hired to "mentor" a new Superman series. Sources are revealing that the studio has a script they are happy with but could use some improvements. That's where Nolan comes in. He'll likely end up with an Executive Producer credit. Also in development are Wonder Woman and the Flash.

So, there's your appetizer. The meal is on the way.
