What are you doing for Darwin Day?
Today is Darwin Day! A day in honor of the man who educated the population about the evolutionary process, Charles Darwin. It's a day with various events around the nation. Many places are having lectures and fun activities for kids. Some cities, such as Los Angeles and New Orleans are issuing proclamations in honor of the great man. Unfortunately there aren't any events that I could find going on in Milwaukee, at least according to the International Darwin Day Foundation. Charles Darwin was of course born on February 12, 1809, the same day as Abraham Lincoln. Maybe the two most important figures of the 19th century.
Talkorigins is a great website for those who want to learn more about evolution. It's sad but true, even though the evidence for evolution has accumulated to such an overwhelming degree over the last 150 years, that there is so much misinformation and ignorance on the subject. The problem is of course the creationist movement, or what is sometimes called, Intelligent Design. That is a movement designed to get religion taught in science classes.
The religious right of course will not be happy until we, the U.S., because a Christian republic where any science that is taught has to conform to the bible. When that happens of course, we will cease to be a great secular/ Enlightenment based republic, and than we will just become a Christian rightwing version of Saudi Arabia.
