What to make of BuzzGrub - is it good for your writing career?

There's a new site launching soon that will be asking for writers and bloggers to submit content. As a writer who is always looking for exposure, I don't know what to think about this site, whether it'll be good for my goals and if it will truly help me. So I'm just going to think aloud and ask some rhetorical questions, some non-rhetorical questions, and see if we can't all come up with an answer.

Getting Published is Essential

This is what I've told myself for years. In the past, before the internet made publishing your words easy, getting anything published that I could then put down on a resume was my top priority. However, with the Internet making publishing your words almost passe, it's important to choose sites where your stories will actually carry a little weight with other publications. So, do you think this BuzzGrub fits that bill? It's supposed to be a news site - really not unlike this one - so it should, shouldn't it?

The Right Amount of Editorial Oversight

If there's one thing I've learned as a writer, editors can be pains in the butt. Some I've worked with should just go ahead and call themselves censors. But, for a site to be taken seriously there really needs to be some editorial oversight to ensure that the stories going up are of some quality. The right balance to strike is one that offers writers the freedom to write what they want, while also keeping them honest. It's too soon to tell if this new site will hit that balance, but it's vital for them to have.

Big Fish in a Little Pond

The reason this site's piqued my curiosity is that I like to be a big fish in a little pond. When sites get too big, you're just one fish in the ocean and its impossible to be noticed. At new sites, it's easier to stand out, make a large contribution, and therefore be noticed by other publications who might help me advance my career. So the question is, will this site grow too quickly and ruin that?

What's the Answer?

I don't know what the answer is. I wish I had all of the answers becasuse it would make life easier. And it's obvious why I should be alternately cautiously optimistic as well as skeptical of this site. I just don't know what to think...
