Thanksgiving 2011 falls on November 22 followed by Black Friday on November 23

While Black Friday 2011 will be the biggest shopping day of the year, many of the stores will not be open on Thanksgiving to prepare for the rush of shoppers the following day.

As a general rule, most stores are not open on Thanksgiving at all, but that does appear to be changing as the competition grows.

Walmart Supercenters, which are open 24 hours, will remain open on Thanksgiving, but other Walmart stores will close for Thanksgiving day and then likely open at midnight on Thanksgiving night to start the Black Friday sales. They have not disclosed their plans for 2011 yet, but in 2010 they opened at midnight, and it is thought this year will be the same. They may not have their big electronics sale until just before dawn however.

Walmart has already started their Black Friday ads and deals.

Most TargetKohl's and Macy's stores will be closed on Thanksgiving, but will open at midnight across the country so that people can start their shopping early. They will also be holding Black Friday sales starting as soon as they open their doors.

However, some Target stores across the U.S. will be open from 8  a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving as part of a pilot program to see if it is successful. Stores in Denver will be open as part of the pilot, but check with your local store first before assuming it is open. Chances are, many will stay closed.

Kmart will be open on Thanksgiving from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Sears was open last year on Thanksgiving for the first time in its 85-year history. They opened from 7 a.m. to noon, and then at 4 a.m. on Black Friday. They have not yet announced their plans for 2011.

Best Buy will be closed on Thanksgiving, but will open at midnight for Black Friday.

Toys "R" Us last year opened its doors at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night, and it appears that will stay the same for this year, although that has not been confirmed yet.

Most Disney Store locations will open at midnight on Thanksgiving, although 150 stores will open early, but the exact time has not been announced.

J.C.Penny will be closed on Thanksgiving, but will open at 4 a.m. on Black Friday for the holiday sales. The only exception will be where there are stores located in malls that open earlier. Where that is the case, J.C. Penny will open at the same time as the mall.
