What's the difference between a doodlebug and a dowser?

You'll find the answer to that one and much more in Everyone's Guide to the Oilpatch, by Calgary historian David Finch.  In her review in the Calgary Herald, Ruth Myles gives thumbs up to this book, appreciating the historical information about the energy industry in Alberta as well as the insight into the workings of the oilpatch now.

"For example, how many barrels of oil does two tonnes of
oilsands produce? A hundred? Fifty? Try one little ol' barrel. And the
next time you're at the gas station, compare the price at the pump to
the cost of a litre of bottled water.

Here's one more tidbit that
stuck: 'On average, it takes between 750 and 1,500 cubic feet of
natural gas (enough to heat a house for a week) and up to five barrels
of fresh water to process and upgrade just one barrel of oil.'"
