Which Vampires Are Better? Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries?

Vampires have long been a part of literature, popular culture, television shows and movies, but with the success of the Twilight frandchise, True Blood, the Vampire Diaries, Anne Rice and even the vampires from 30 Days of Night, this begs the age-old question:

Which Vampires Are Better?

All of them have different traits and some have special powers, but it does make you wonder, in a fight which vampires would win against the others?

Let's take a closer look at the traits they have:

In European folklore when the tale of the vampire started becoming popular in stories and books, vampires were a terrible site to behold. They were often suicide victims, witches, or evil beings come back to life or possessing the body of another; when the stories were first told they caused such hysteria that people were executed that were thought to be vampires.

These vampires were hideous to look at, and did not possess the pale stone skin that the modern-day vampires have. They also had no fangs, a trait only shared by the Twilight vampires.

It wasn't until the legend of Bram Stoker that the pale vampire came to be more common and it was beyond that point that vampires were described to be beautiful beings, save for Nosferatu , the vampires from 30 Days of Night, and the Buffy vampires in their vampire form.

The vampires of Twilight are beautiful, but the ones from True Blood are considered ordinary beside the stunning appearance of Edward Cullen and his family.

However, looks aren't everything, as let's look at the weaknesses the famous vampires have in common.

It's interesting to note that all vampires in folklore and popular culture do not have one thing that is common between all of them. Even getting staked, which for a long time has been the most common way known to kill a vampire, won't kill the vampires of Anne Rice or Twilight

Sunlight also won't kill the vampires from Twilight as they just sparkle and the Vampire Diaries Damon brothers have a special ring that protects them. Actually, almost nothing can kill the vampires from Twilight, except for fire.

The vampires from Bram Stoker are suspectible to almost anything, except possibly silver. Silver burning the skin is only an issue in True Blood and Blade, and that has been passed down from European folklore, so the other vampires can wear all the silver earings they want. The idea of Christian symbols hurting or banishing a vampire has since been left behind as an issue after Buffy, the more modern vampires don't have to worry about that anymore.

But what about supernatural powers? Which vampires are more powerful than the others? Or more importantly, which vampires would win in a fight against the others?

Well, not surprisingly, all of them are immortal, and almost all have supernatural strenght except for the vampires from folklore and we're not sure about Nosferatu, as he doesn't do anything that would require him to show his strength. So, those two categories are out.

So left we have the vampires from Buffy, Blade, True Blood, Twilight, Anne Rice and 30 Days of Night

Well all of them have supernatural senses and supernatural speed, but the vampires from Twilight and 30 Days of Night do not have supernatural healing abilities so if they get hurt they stay hurt, so they are out of the running.

The vampires from Buffy and Blade cannot fly, whereas some of the vampires from Anne Rice and True Blood can, and that seems like it would be valuable in a fight, so now we're down to two groups. The vampires from Anne Rice have this special ability to gain gifts as they grow older so let's say Eric from True Blood (who is very old) is fighting Lestat from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, who would win?

Eric is way older, but Lestat gains supernatural abilities. It's pretty safe to say Eric would win but it would be worth watching the fight anyway!

Finally, let's look at the ability of vampires to reproduce more vampires both by biting and by sex (a vampire is only as good as his vamp family right?)

Well, as far as is known about all vampires, only the ones from Twilight are able to have sex and make a baby (albeit a crazy demon baby that grows super fast but a baby none the less).

If you were bitten by a vampire from Bram Stoker, Nosferatu, Blade or Twilight you could become a vampire yourself. Same goes for the vampires of The Vampire Diaries, but you need to feed on human blood to complete the process for that one.

In order to become a vampire in True Blood, Buffy, or Anne Rice however, you must have a complete blood transfusion where the vampire will suck out all your blood and then replace it with its own.

The vampire with the most followers is most likely to be Carlisle Cullen, who turned six vampires himself.

So which vampires do you think are better? Do you have a favorite group?

We must also include the vampires from Let the Right One In, which is the best vampire movie of all time. Of all time. We only meet one vampire in this movie, a 12-year-old girl called Eli, and she's a vampire of few words, but we learn quite a bit about what she can and can't do...

Appearance:

  • Skin Color: Sickly pale
  • Fangs: No
  • Reflection: Never addressed
  • Shadow: Yes
  • Attractiveness: Normal, but Eli displays a cavalier attitude toward hygiene and is really stank, and wears dirty clothes.

Supernatural abilities:

  • Immortality: As far as anyone knows, yes
  • Supernatural strength: Unusually strong for a scrawny 12-year-old girl
  • Supernatural senses: Yes
  • Supernatural speed: Well, amazing reflexes, anyway
  • Supernatural healing: Yes, but it's not fast
  • Flight: Uh... yeah
  • Shapeshifting: Yes, but uses it to give herself stuff like badass claws
  • Glamour: Yes, but very subtle in the movie
  • Telepathy: Yes, when using glamour
  • Telekinesis: Nope
  • Pyrokinesis: No. Not a fan of fire.

Weaknesses:

  • Stake: Unknown
  • Sunlight: Extremely vulnerable
  • Decapitation: Fatal
  • Drowning: Unknown
  • Fire: See "sunlight", so, yeah
  • Silver, Garlic, Christian symbols: Unaddressed
  • Invitation: Must be invited into a home

Reproduction:

  • Via drinking victim's blood/infection

Oh, and to hear Eli say it, vampires aren't "undead"- when asked, she looks at Oskar like he's a total idiot. Which he kind of is. John Ajvide Lindqvist clearly had a blast in reinventing the vampire legend for 1980s suburban Stockholm.

To include sparkling, "vegetarian vampires" in this discussion is so wrong. To exclude "Let the Right One In" even more.
