Whistler Film Festival 2007: Weekend Review
Great time up at the Whistler Film Festival again this year. Left on Friday and the weather was nice, I thought I had read that it would be clear all weekend so we packed up the car with our regular ol’ tires, unaware of the blizzard that would start Saturday night and continue through Sunday.
Stayed at the Adara, a small boutique hotel right off the Village Square, and we were blown away - very friendly staff, great decor and environment, and super dog-friendly. I don’t think I’ll ever stay anywhere else in Whistler now if I can help it, I loved this place.
The Brightlight Pictures/Heenan Blaikie party on Friday night was good times - Araxi was packed and they had an open martini bar, wine tables and a bit of food.
Saturday we went to the Shortsfest “Comedies and Oddities” screening but weren’t too impressed with their selection. Nothing too funny, some definitely odd, but mostly a snoozefest. That put us off seeing any other films over the weekend, unfortunately.
We toyed with the idea of staying an extra night and avoiding the snowy highway on Sunday, but decided we should be fine if we drove slow. Big mistake! We were sliding around on the ice, couldn’t get chains because they wouldn’t fit our tires, and all in all it took us 8 hours to get through the highway closures and lineups. Apparently a semi and a bus went off the road right before Horseshoe Bay and we had to wait there for hours, so close to the end. Next trip to Whistler = winter tires for sure.
