Well, I'd say that he's a lot more "African" than the vast majority of Americans of African descent, whose ancestors typically arrived in this country a lot earlier than those most of other ethnic groups.

This reminds me of a girl I knew in high school -- a white, upper-class South African who wrote "African-American" on all her college applications...

The term African American is meant to denote heritage and lineage, not locality, an attempt for those of us robbed of our heritage and knowledge of ourselves to reach back to the land of our forefathers and foremothers.

As you state, Brian, in the case of most Americans of African descent, the question of being 'African' is almost an assured debate.

This is a true case of semantics. Anyone finding themselves living, possibly born, even located for many years, in Africa, who relocates to America, indeed can call themselves African American. There is renewed debate within the African American/Black community to adapt another form of terminology because of this reality.

However, since geneticists are stating that evidence points to all of humanity originating out of Africa, I'm not sure where any of this leaves us anyway.

AAPPundit, you say Douglas says he, ".... wants to Join to engage in dialogue about black people." I think it is obvious that the creators of the blog hadn't considered Douglas nor the desire of someone like Douglas' desire to join the blog. It will be interesting to see what it is he wants to ".... dialog about black people."

With the anonimity of the internet, he may not be the only White African American or White American, for that matter, at that blog or any blog that calls itself an African American blog site.

I'm the creator of the blog, and yourright. I didnot think about whites actually asking to participate in this blog. They have hundreds of thousands of their own. but at the same time members have voiced an opinion, what harm can it do. If he acts out, like anyone ban him.

A friend of mine (Afrikaner) was on a school band trip to the USA during the bad ol' days of Apartheid, and no black kids were allowed in their school, never mind the school band-- when the band arrived in the States, none of the school families into the town they visited wanted to host them because they were African! That same guy is the subject of a still-in-production documentary about skin color and identity in South Africa called Pale Male, produced by Underdog, with whom I have a joint project.
