LAS CRUCES — It was Jan. 18, 1933 — 75 years ago today — and President Herbert Hoover was two days away from turning his Depression-wracked presidency over to Franklin Roosevelt.

One of his last acts was to sign a document regarding a patch of land in New Mexico, a state that had just turned 21.

That patch of land is now known as White Sands National Monument and Hoover's signature established it as part of the National Park Service.

Absolutely beautiful spot, especially with the mountains in the background.

As soon as I saw these footprints in the untrodden sand, I knew I had to take a photo of them. I don't who's footprints they are, but it seemed like they were walking carefully so as to not disturb the sand too much. Making footprints like these is not easy in the hilly dunes of the White Sands National Monument.

Over 20 years since I was here, on this day we thought to catch a sunrise before flying home from El Paso. This is as far in as we could go after the gates opened before the color went away. A crisp, clear, beautiful day.

I was on the way to the airport in El Paso, only had an hour to spend at this beautiful place...made some mental notes to return with more time!

White Sands National Monument is beautiful and desolate. To sit on the top of a dune, with only the white of the sand, the brilliant blue sky and the gold of the few plants around and just be silent was an awe-inspiring moment indeed.

I had the chance to hike around White Sands National Monument while on work assignments between Alamogordo and Las Cruces. A beautiful day in the Land of Enchantment with clear blue skies and moderate temperatures.

What a surreal environment. I can't wait to go back again.
