'Who Do You Think You Are?': Celebrities To Find Out Where They Hail From

New reality TV series 'Who Do You Think You Are?' premiered on NBC tonight. As part of the series, seven celebrities will embark on the quest to discover the genealogical roots of who they are. Ancestry.com is NBC's official partner on the series, but the celebrities will have all the research done for them. The idea of the show is not novel. It is based on the British series with the same title.

The seven-episode program will lead celebrities on a journey of self-discovery as they unearth their family trees that reveal surprising, inspiring and even tragic stories that are often linked to crucial events in American history.

The show started with actress Sarah Jessica Parker's journey to discover her ancestors. Parker's family turned out to be linked to Salem witch trials. Her ancestor Esther Elwell was involved in the trials, but survived.

Next up to discover their roots will be Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Broderick, Spike Lee, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields and Emmitt Smith.

After the show premier, people were looking for free ancestry search services on Google.

Among the free services that offer ancestry tracking are FamilySearch.org, GenealogyToday.com and OneGreatFamily.com.

Very interesting article and thank you for sharing! My family is originally from Germany and I would love to track ancestors down.

This is a good show, the only reality TV that I have enjoyed... there was one I liked in the UK and it was about the Doctor Who actor David Tennent (real surname is MacDonald -  I was more interested in this one about his because we are from the same town and his father was a minister who used to visit my school).

It was amazing to see him find out all this information about his family. The bloke was really shocked.

David was born in 1971 in Bathgate, a post-industrial town in West Lothian between Glasgow and Edinburgh. His father Sandy MacDonald is a Minister in the Church of Scotland. David’s real surname is MacDonald, but when he was starting out as an actor another performer was already known by that name. He chose instead the stage name Tennant because he saw Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant’s name in an article in Smash Hits and thought it sounded good!.

David begins his historical investigations at his parent's home in Paisley by focusing on his father’s side of the family, but  learns that the paper trail on the MacDonald family appears to run dry in Callendar, Perthshire. It cannot be so readily traced to the MacDonald clan from the outer Hebrides, as David and his father had hoped. So he turns his attention to the lineage of his mother Helen  McLeod, and  finds that these forebears hailed from the Isle of Mull.
