Eurovison 2012: Sweden Wins the Eurovision Song Contest

After a heated battle for pop-TV supremacy, the dust has settled. Loreen from Sweden has won the 2012 Eurovision song contest in Baku, Azerbaijan with "Euphoria". You can see Loreen's performance of "Euphoria" below, along with a few other performances from the May 26 Eurovision Grand Final.

Some of you have been following since the prelims, while others just tune in for the Grand Final. Yet others have been hiding in a dark, quiet room, wearing kitsch-canceling headphones until the whole thing is over.

Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Top 5

  1. Sweden (Loreen): 372 pts
  2. Russia (Buranovskiye Babushki): 259 pts
  3. Serbia (Željko Joksimović ): 214 pts
  4. Azerbaijan (Sabina Babayeva): 150 pts
  5. Albania (Rona Nishliu) : 146 pts

Eurovision voters, though they can vote 20 times, cannot vote for their own country's act, so Ireland's Jedward implored their fans to travel to the continent and vote from there. In recession-gripped Europe, we're not sure how many people would actually do this. We're guessing the number is somewhere close to zero, judging by the scores. Besides, we're unconvinced that Jedward's fans are old enough to travel unaccompanied.

Meanwhile, Sweden seemed a heavy favorite among the Twitterati as we watched, and pulled ahead early in the judged portion of the voting.

You can see Twitter reactions to the Eurovision 2012 results below. While Eurovision was slow to gather Twitter followers (only 69,000 at the moment), eurovision.tv has been at its breaking point for the entire competition, struggling to stay online and often failing. You probably noticed the DDoS check while tuning in to watch the Grand Final.

The amount of work and organization that goes into Eurovision is amazing, though one is left wondering why the songwriting is so weak. Then again, its pop music for a multinational mass audience who may not speak your language. Getting the whole show to run so smoothly is quite a feat: 26 different acts, with staging and lighting, in an hour.

In 2013, Sweden will host the 58th Eurovision Song Contest.

It's interesting to see Azerbaijan as a Eurovision host: the former Soviet state is not a country with particularly strong human-rights or press-freedom credentials.

I think that the best song won. UK did very badly and even though I am from Ireland I think that the song was very weak and got more than it deserved.

Let's be realisticks please. Serbia in 3rd place? and Albania 5th? Ok. Sweden had a great song and a great presantation. Azerbaijan got 4rth place because it had a good song and it was the host of the competition which is making sense but there were great songs like the german's song who deserved a better place! and about the jedward sorry but their clothes were terrible. their song was ok but not great and they really should stop pretenting that they are 5 years old. if they were 5 they would be cute but their not. they are too old to wear clothes like that... and about the comment for iceland. i totally agree. their song was ok but a little boring. not for eurovision...Italy was great too and Hungary. Russia was good too. They might be a little old (ok more than a little old) for the competition and we shouldn't give them that place but they should be definetely at the top 10. oo, and estonia had to be more high that they were! I don't really get it the whole voting thing but if this is what europe want then the music taste has gone very low...
