Why are conservatives attacking Django Unchained?

If you know anything about Quinton Tarantino, it is that he is a fine director and writer and not half bad actor, such as when he starred with George Clooney in from Dawn till Dusk. One of the common themes of his movies is revenge.

He did so with the Kill Bill movies, part 1/2 and later with Inglorious Basterds, the latter being a revenge movies of Jewish American soldiers getting revenge against Nazis, including killing a whole bunch of them at a movie theater, including one Adolf Hitler.

One never heard neo-nazis or German Americans decrying this film. Some people probably condemned the violence but there isn't much sympathy for Nazis.

I bring this up because there are conservatives who viciously attack the new Tarantino film, Django Unchained. This film, which is about an excaped/ex-slave played by Jamie Foxx who gets revenge on a plantation owner performed by Leonardo DiCaprio, who holds Foxx's wife played by Kerry Washington.

One of these conservative critics of the movie and Tarantino is the talk show host Mike Gallagher, a man who thinks it is a great think that the Confederate battle flag continues to fly over the South Carolina state capital in Columbia, S.C. In fact, he is amazed that any African Americans would oppose it. You know, a flag of a nation that was set up for the sole purpose of keeping their ancestors in chains.

Look, I understand that there are some whites in the South who are still uneasy about the past history of their ancestors. Sometimes their fathers when it comes to segreation or their great-grandfathers when it comes to slavery. But it is part of the historical record. Indeed, the extreme religious fundamentalists that still infects the South today, or the Bible Belt, is a direct product of Southerners using a literal reading of the bible to defend slavery. The bible of course, being very pro-slavery.

Lastly Tarantino says the war on drugs is like slavery during an interview comparing slavery and the drug war being as harmful when it comes to the African American community, including specifically black males. Though I would not go quite that far, slavery being a worse evil of course, but the drug war has devasted the black community. Many young black men will have lifetime felony records for selling relatively small amounts of drugs as teenagers. Blacks take illegal drugs at about the same rates as whites but suffer much harsher punishment. It's an issue we should look into.
