Women for Women International Helps Women Displaced by War
Women for Women International was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show October 1 to draw attention to the plight of women living in war torn nations across the globe. The October 1 episode of Oprah featured Lisa Shannon, founder of the Run for Congo Women, who is working with Women for Women International to help more than 1,000 women living in the ravaged nation.
The Women for Women International edition of the Oprah Winfrey Show also featured authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn whose book, Half the Sky, aims to end the oppression of women that war causes throughout the world. This powerful episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show featuring advocates from Women for Women International kicks off a month of women-centric issues; October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Women for Women International provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. Their intent is to change "the world one woman at a time."
On the Women for Women International website, it is clear that their mission is just incredible.
"We begin by working with women who may have lost everything in conflict and often have nowhere else to turn. Participation in our one-year program launches women on a journey from victim to survivor to active citizen. We identify services to support graduates of the program as they continue to strive for greater social, economic and political participation in their communities."
