The last encounter in Group A will be a do or die contest for the two teams involved. With a win and a loss each, both India and Sri Lanka are in with a chance of progressing to the Super Sixes, when the teams face each other at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (February 5).

After a 32-run defeat against England, India will take this as an opportunity to come back strong at Sri Lanka, who come into the game after a massive 209-run loss against West Indies. Though Sri Lanka will take some solace from their thrilling victory against England, the defending champions, their poor show against West Indies highlighted concerns in both batting and bowling departments.

Apart from the pace bowling duo of Chamani Seneviratna and Shashikala Siriwardena, the captain, none of Sri Lanka’s bowlers have been impressive. Sri Lanka’s batters, however, have had a decent run in the warm-ups and the game against England. “We have no option but to win our last game against India,” said Siriwardena. “I will tell the girls to look at positives from our match against England and implement those against India. At the same time, we will try and learn from the mistakes we made against West Indies.”

With a compact all-round side, India hold the edge in this contest. India’s batters, led by Thirush Kamini, Poonam Raut and Harmanpreet Kaur, have been responsible for laying a solid platform. With batters like Jhulan Goswami and Karuna Jain, who have been trained specially to bat in the slog, batting is not a major concern for India.

Goswami, India’s strike bowler, has been providing early breakthroughs, but the rest of the bowling has failed to rise to the occasion. “The kind of start Jhulan (Goswami) has provided , she gave us the edge,” said Mithali Raj, the Indian captain. “I hope that we don’t let Sri Lanka score during the Power Plays, that’s where we looked a little lost in the game against England.”

Though Sri Lanka has never beaten India in an ODI, Raj refused to take it lightly. “This is a World Cup, we don’t look down on any team, we’re going to take them as another opponent,” she said. “If we have to qualify for the Super Sixes it is a do or die for us. We’re not taking Sri Lanka lightly because on such wickets it could be anybody’s game and they have done well against England.”

If India wish to keep their tournament hopes alive they have to pull up their socks. As for Sri Lanka, their fate will rely on the outcome of the West Indies vs England clash, should they lose to India.
