Today, April 4th, is World Pillow Fight Day, where people get together in cities around the world and take part in a mass pillow fight with strangers: note, bring your own pillow, they will not be supplied.

In Perth it was held at the Perth Cultural Centre from 2pm to 3pm and they had a few rules:

1. Soft pillows or teddys only. Swing lightly.
2. Wait until the signal to begin.
3. Don't hit anyone without a pillow or with a camera.
4. Take off your glasses beforehand.

Dressing up was encouraged.

In Reykjavik Iceland, held their fight at 3pm and they promoted their fight as a way to release any pent-up anger and frustration.

Along with the Cherry Blossom Festival and Parade, Washington DC also held a pillow fight at 2pm.

A pillow fight was held in Pershing Square in LA, but is encouraging everyone to make sure they clean up their feathers properly and to not leave any mess behind.

The day was organized by the Urban Playground Movement:

All over the world, groups like us organize free, fun, all ages, non-commercial public events. From a massive Mobile Clubbing event in a London train station to a giant pillow fight near the Eiffel Tower in Paris to a subway party beneath the streets of Toronto, it is clear that the urban playground is growing around the world, leaving more public and more social cities in its wake. This is the urban playground movement, a playful part of the larger public space movement.

[UPDATE - April 5, 2009]

Police in Detroit have ruffled some feathers after they cracked down on an organized pillow fight at a downtown park.

The Detroit News newspaper reports police at Campus Martius Park prevented the feathery fight Saturday by disarming pillow-toting participants.

The bout was part of a worldwide event organized on social networking websites.

Michael Davis says police confiscated the 32-year-old man's pillows but returned the cases.

He says he was told he needed a permit.

Scott Harris of Ferndale told the News it's "not illegal to own a pillow."

Detroit police spokesman James Tate says cleanup was the issue.

I'd quite like to know what happened in Reykjavik actually.. there were in fact 2 fights, one at 1 pm, which had been advertised on facebook and couchsurfing AND pillowfight.com site until the friday night, and then suddenly I found out on Saturday that *someone* had written the guys from pillowfight to tell them to change the time to 3 pm, thereby provoking a total glitch. It was ok because people did turn up, but it did split the group in 2 small ones rather than one big one... How totally UNawesome is that? :(

As for "In Reykjavik Iceland, held their fight at 3pm and they promoted their fight as a way to release any pent-up anger and frustration." I would sincerely be interested in knowing the source of that comment.. Can someone find out please?
