Worlds Largest Hamburger: Alameda County Fair sets world record

Juicy, LLC broke the record for the world's largest hamburger on Saturday at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, California by making a burger that weighed in at 777 pounds. The previous record was 590 pounds, which was set by a burger in Canada. The Guinness World Record officials were present at the fair to confirm the record-breaking burger.

The 777-pound burger was three-feet thick and five feet in diameter and included 50 pounds of onion and lettuce each and 12 pounds of pickle. The estimated calories: 1.375 million. Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty noted when the meat was being lowered onto the scale:

It's this cow's 15 minutes of fame, and it doesn't even know it.

This was Juicy's second attempt at breaking the world record. They tried previously in Houston, Texas, but the burger only weighed in at 500 pounds. The problem with that attempt was that the bun fell apart and the burger didn't flip very well, so the company built a special mold to help flip the burger. The burger is California was flipped every hour by groups of workers.

Juicy's had to build a 72,000-pound custom grill to cook the patty. They started cooking early Saturday morning and finished at 8 p.m. that evening. Health officials were present to make sure the entire meat was cooked properly and used thermometers to monitor the temperatures.

Hundreds of people showed up for the event and were invited to eat from the burger for $.99 per piece. The proceeds from the event went to the local community food bank. Fair spokesperson April Mitchell reported that around 500 people bought a piece of the giant burger and that it was half eaten by the end of the night.
