YouTube and The New Classroom

Anyone who runs a classroom can speak volumes about the struggles to keep the students engaged in good class discussions. There is always the challenge of meeting the learning needs of each student, without putting everyone to sleep. So how do we get around all of the challenges? The challenges of the traditional classroom can only be met with some kind of Creative innovation.

Thankfully we have options for the education of our children and the TRADITIONAL/CONVENTIONAL styles of teaching are not our only avenues. DON'T get me wrong, I am a product of the traditional classroom, I had some wonderful teachers. One thing I learned about teaching from my teachers is in order to reach a student the teacher must have love for what they are doing. Whenever the person who is running the classroom is not too interested in the work that they are doing, the students will respond with the same lack of enthusiasm.

In thinking about and making up lesson plans, it seems that the idea of making things FUN should be considered.

Earlier I mentioned that one of the challenges teachers face is getting the attention of the students and keeping it. I can tell you of my own hardships in trying to get young people to pay attention to anything that does not involve video games or YouTube.

Since it was virtually impossible to ignore, I have decided to allow yet another unconventional entity into my classroom. You guessed it YOUTUBE.  The inclusion has caused quite a spark in some of our students; they are motivated to learn what we have planned for them because at the end of the unit they are permitted to produce a video that sums up what they have learned in a particular module, and to upload it for public view. They have been learning: Film production, music composition, the history of Classical Rock, voice, acting, writing, character development, and many other things. The change in the learning environment has diminished my stress level making learning fun for my students and a real joy for me. To put in the language of the students, we are having a" blast"

Resonant Earth, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I believe you are on the right track. The first hurdle was having the desire to overcome this challenge in the first place. I remember one of my favorite teachers in middle school, (back them it was called Junior High), this was in 1972. Mr. Beckman wore long hair, a fringed leather vest, and love beads. His effort to increase our interest involved playing the rock concert "Tommy" by "The Who". While I don't even remember what class it was, I'll never forget him, and the lesson I learned about overcoming the obstacles we experience in life.

I feel the same way as you about my teachers who dared to be different, I remember them the most, I do not recall many who were not unique in the way they expressed themselves to me. I still have a great amount of love and appreciation for them, I think the LOVE that I felt coming from them is what caused the memories to stick.

This is awesome! I love how you're helping these kids showcase their talent on the global 24-7 web- it's free, and they've all got something to say- the skits were hiliarious, Smells Like Teen Spirit Rocked, White Rabbit was a TRIP*@!***@@@!!! & the Danzig rendition blew me away, Safiyyah has a voice from Hell!!!
