Devon Clifford, 30, of the indie rock band, You Say Party, We Say Die, died Saturday night from what has been diagnosed as a brain haemorrhage stemming from an un-diagnosed pre-condition.

During a show, Friday night at Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre, Clifford suddenly leaned over his drum kit to what his band mates figured, was picking up a drum stick. Clifford was in fact, suffering from a “massive brain bleed” and was rushed to hospital. Clifford died Saturday night in hospital with his friends and family by his side.

The Life of Devon Clifford

Devon grew up playing bagpipes and piano before jamming with his friends in the Clifford household as a teenager. These jam sessions formed the crux that would later be known as, You Say Party, We Say Die. Devon was also known for his generosity with the Portlands Hotel Society, which helps individuals in Vancouver’s East Side.

Quote

"No one had any idea about the condition -- it just happened to pop that night while he was playing with the band."
Devon's Father, Ronald Clifford in The Province

The band has gained steam in Europe in recent years, as well as Canada, with their signature new-wave, pop sound. Their most recent release, XXXX, has gained cult-status in the US, as the band is coming off solid performances at this year’s SXSW Festival.

Kind words from fans and friends across the globe have been pouring into the Clifford household according to Devon’s father, Ronald. The band has not released any statements regarding upcoming shows, but the band’s record label, Paper Bag released this statement:

“It is with absolute sadness to report that our dear friend Devon Clifford passed away just hours ago in a Vancouver hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. I request that we respect the family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”

The band also paid tribute to the late drummer on their twitter feed stating, “DEVON CLIFFORD 1979 – 2010 R.I.P.”
