On September 15, 2007, thousands of volunteers from all over the Philippines will join an estimated 35 million people in over 120 countries to take part in the Clean Up the World Weekend and address causes of climate change.
Clean Up the Philippines Movement, Inc. is an official Member of Clean Up the World, one of the largest community based environmental campaigns in the world, and is organising the Clean Up the Philippines Day on September 15, 2007 as part of the international Clean Up the World Weekend Celebration.
Professor Roald R. Arcangel, Founder and Chairman of Clean Up the Philippines Movement said, “It is important to be a part of a global organisation that unites millions of people to take action to protect the environment and improve communities. Over the weekend, our volunteers and Members nationwide will be holding their own local clean up event and other environmental activities under the banner of Clean Up the Philippines.
“We need the support of as many people in the community as possible and urge everyone to join us on Clean Up the Philippines Day and help make our country a cleaner, healthier place to live,” Mr. Arcangel continued.
Clean Up the World Founder and Chairman Ian Kiernan AO sent a message of support to the local volunteers participating in the Clean Up the World Weekend. “Volunteers from Clean Up the Philippines campaign will be making a valuable contribution not just to their own communities but to rest of the world as well. At a time when action on climate change is needed, every bit helps. Congratulations to the Members of Clean Up the Philippines campaign for looking after their community and being global citizens as well.
From national clean up campaigns to recycling and water reuse projects, volunteers will take part on a variety of environmental projects with year-round activities celebrated over Clean Up the World Weekend, this year celebrated on 14-16 September.
Clean Up the Philippines Day has been supported locally by the Australian Embassy in Manila, DENR and Fiesta Hosting.
Globally, the campaign’s Corporate Partner is Veolia Environmental Services and the Global Media Partner is National Geographic Channels International. Qantas is the Official Airline and Sponsor, and the Australian Government, through its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is a Supporter of Clean Up the World.
In 2007, Clean Up the World is encouraging and supporting Members to take action at a local level to help address climate change. Energy conservation education programs, planting trees, walk to work days and waste reduction projects are just a few of the possible options that Members can choose from.
Clean Up the World originated in Sydney, Australia in 1993 and is held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The campaign brings together community groups, schools, governments, businesses and individuals to undertake activities to improve water quality, clean up local streets, parks, waterways and forests and educate children about the environment.
