After battling back from a 4-1 deficit, The Diamondbacks tied it in the eighth as Quentin walked and was called safe for his first career stolen base, although replays indicated he was out. Pinch-hitter Jeff DaVanon follwed with an RBI triple.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth against Phillies closer Tom Gordon, who'd blown the save an inning earlier. Quentin hit a routine grounder to David Bell, who slipped as he threw home and pulled Mike Lieberthal off the bag to allow the go-ahead run. But with the bases loaded and nobody out, they could do no further damage.

Arizona also couldn't take advantage of Phillies starter Ryan Madson's wildness early in the ballgame. Madson allowed five hits and five walks in his four innings and hit two batters. He also tied a Major League record with four wild pitches in the third inning, but the Diamondbacks could only get to the right-hander for two runs.

And to make matters worse, they nearly ran themselves out of the ballgame, as Batista ran through a stop sign and was thrown out at home in the fourth inning. Then in the seventh, Johnny Estrada popped up to left and the ball was misplayed by Pat Burrell, but he was thrown out at second base trying to stretch the single into a double.

"We probably could have made it a little bit easier on ourselves with some of the opportunities we had," manager Bob Melvin said.
