Today is Ireland's Daffodil Day--an annual event that calls attention to and raises funds for cancer research and treatment. The event has called attention to an deficiency in available cancer screening and treatment in regions at a distance from Dublin and Belfast.

"It is essential that women here can avail of the same mobile unit screening service as has been rolled out in Eastern regions," Mr Kenny said. He said Fine Gael would make a priority of rolling-out Breastcheck and the National Cervical Cancer Screening Programme all over the country.

"The one thing that cancer sufferers don’t have is time to wait," Mr Kenny said.

The general election is expected in late spring.

It is estimated that more than 22,000 people develop cancer in Ireland each year.

This year is the 20th anniversary of Daffodil Day. In 2006 the event raised €2.9 million, and the target this year is €3 million.
