Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez visited Britain on 14-16 May 2006. Being refused a formal welcome by Downing Street - who emphasised that Chavez's visit is private, with no official contacts planned - he was invited by London's Mayor to attend a meeting at Camden Centre, where he was welcomed by a crowd of supporters.
