WASHINGTON — Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty loopholes the law to keep his General Counsel, Peter Nickles in office despite Nickles' residency deficiency. Is the public well served by people who rule from afar?

Mayor Fenty was born in DC and still lives there. Based on 2000 Census data, Mayor Fenty lives in a neighborhood with a racial makeup very simlar to the city. However, Fenty's top lawyers; Attorney General Linda Singer and General Counsel to the Mayor Peter Nickles live in areas very different from Mayor Fenty's Washington.

Linda Singer lives in a part of DC where the White population percentage is 2.66 times the city's percentage. In Singer's Census Tract 7.2% of her neighbors are African American compared to the city's 60%.

Peter Nickles does not live in Washington, DC. The General Counsel to the Mayor of the District of Columbia lives in Great Falls, Virginia.
