DC's broken hydrants "an embarassment"

A series of broken and neglected fire hydrants in the greater DC area have finally garnered the attention of new Fire Chief Dennis Rubin. The chief reported to a council yesterday that nearly a quarter of the city's fire hydrants are in need of replacement or repair. Very scary stuff.
The broken hydrants are a safety hazard and an embarrassment, said Rubin, who took office last month after leading fire departments in Atlanta and other cities. Although firefighters typically can draw water from other nearby hydrants during a blaze, they have said that time is wasted trying to figure out which ones work, as was the case in a recent fire at the Georgetown public library.

This story is right on target! You'd think that in the post 9/11 era, especially in Washington, DC, that firefighting would be a top priority. But it appears not to be the case: so many broken hydrants is a scary thing. --Bill
