YankeeJim Opinionary: I saw your pictures of injured children from Palestine on NowPublic, and noted that you are a peace activist. I am for peace for the Palestinian People and want a peaceful coexistence with Israel. No one in the world benefits from the constant battle between two people who claim homeland rights to overlapping geography.

I favor neither people based on religion as I believe in separation between church and state. However global reality is that people develop communities and sometimes the communities tend to be demographically more common than not. Belonging to a religion or some other belief form is one characteristic that distinguishes people, and there are many others.

In a global context, it is unacceptable for one group of people to discriminate against another on the basis of race, sex, creed, including religion. Therefore, under my personal belief and under the Constitution of the United States, Israel would have no right to exist as a religious state any more than Iran would, for instance.

Palestinian people have a right to a community based on history and the fact that they were historically displaced. No matter what the retrospective argument might be, the fact is that Palestinians deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

Palestinian people, like Jewish people, have had to fight for their natural rights. Given the global institution, the United Nations, why would it not intervene on behalf of all parties for the purpose of producing a viable solution? Why stay away from a problem that demands immersion by global powers to effect a solution?

Unfairness in the matter comes from biases that prevent powerful nations to use objective sense to sort out a solution that is most fair for the communities of participation. No doubt that those who have enjoyed unfair favor must endure shedding of assets and power to achieve a workable equilibrium and balance of power.

Obama fails to resuscitate the Middle East peace processObituaries for the hope generated

Barack Obama seems to have failed dismally in his first sustained attempt to show he is serious about making peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Obituaries for the hope generated by his election, peaking in his Cairo speech in June, are being written in Arabic, Hebrew, and English. For those who never believed that even Obama could succeed where Bill Clinton failed in the final days of his presidency, this was a death foretold.

But having been unable to persuade or cajole Binyamin Netanyahu to accept a total freeze on West Bank settlements, friendly Arab states to "normalise" relations with Israel or the Palestinians to restart long-stalled peace talks without preconditions, what will he do next?

Mahmoud Abbas's decision to stand down as Palestinian president has sharpened concerns that the moribund peace process is now facing a terminal crisis. Even if Abbas relents, as he yet may, Obama's strategy is clearly in deep trouble.

There is a visible absence of empathy here for the Palestenian people.
