After strong winds caused several crashes during the first stage of the Vuelta a Murcia stage race, the organizing committee decided to have the riders complete only the last 10km of the race today. The largely ceremonial show for the fans was topped off when the cyclists decided to give the stage's prize money to the family of Isaac Galvez. Galvez passed away tragically at the indoor track Gent Six Days in Belgium this past November.

This gesture provides a sense of peace at a time when cycling is going through its most difficult time, fractured as it is by doping allegations and political posturing between the various associations. Sometimes it is enough to know that sport can remind us of what is important through its own effacement. It is in the moments when cycling, or any other sport, gestures outside its bounds that we see how little the competitions themselves can matter.
