This cross is near the point where the settlers of Grand Pre were put on the boats and deported to the east coast of the United States and to France. Those who hid away and stayed were under sentence of death. About 60% of those deported died during the voyage; as usual, the dead were mostly infants, the old, and the sick. After nine years and the end of the war between France and Britain, Acadians were allowed back, but they could only settle in certain areas, and only in small groups.www.grand-pre.com/index_en.html
