ST. PETERSBURG - Despite the arrests of six anti-war protesters outside
BayWalk, members of the group vowed Sunday to return next weekend.

(Note: they plan to protest again next Saturday night.)

8/18 Update:

This story has expanded from just St. Pete to all of the vigils and demonstrations taking place around the U.S.

I've not yet made it to the protests but came upon the following follow-up articles, letters to the editor, and the group's web site:

President Bush's ranch.

From a St. Pete for Peace newsletter I received in my email today:

Baywalk update
Plan of action: Hit the streets again Saturday night
from 7:30 to 9:30pm!

  • Please meet on the corner of 2nd Avenue & 2nd Street N by 7:30pm
prior to Saturday's protest at Baywalk so we can discuss the latest
developments and go over our plans for the evening.
  • Following the protest we will again be having a potluck picnic at
Crescent Lake near the big banyan tree, on 15th Avenue and 5th Street N.

At MoveOn.org:

On Wednesday, August 17, hundreds of thousands of
supporters gathered at 1,627 vigils in all 50 states and the District
of Columbia. The vigils were the largest event we've organized. From Alaska to Florida, Maine to Mississippi, Oregon to South Carolina and New York to Texas
— we gathered together to acknowledge the sacrifices made by Cindy
Sheehan, her son, Casey and the more than 1,800 brave American men and
women who have given their lives in Iraq—and their moms and families.
Thank you so much for participating and making these vigils a success.

According to this story:

ST. PETERSBURG - First the city administration suggested creating "no-protest zones."

Then the metal barricades went up.

Now some City Council members are proposing another tactic for
dealing with protesters who congregate by the busy BayWalk
entertainment complex: closing the street to cars on Friday and
Saturday nights and removing the barricades.

Road closure proposed for portion of BayWalk on certain nights

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- Protesters say a proposal to shut down the road in front of BayWalk will not affect their protests.

The
city is looking into possibly shutting down a section of 2nd Avenue to
drivers on Friday and Saturday nights. Currently barricades separate
those visiting BayWalk from protesters, but there is not a lot of room
between the barricades and the road.

City council recommends removing barriers at BayWalk

St. Petersburg, Florida - St. Petersburg Police say they never intended
to limit free speech by placing barricades at BayWalk on Friday and
Saturday nights.

But the barricades drew more protestors against the war in Iraq, and against the barricades.
