Cheating is nothing new in any species, lying is somewhat common, but in animal kingdoms it has been assumed that physical shows of strength were legitimate. If you got it, you flaunt it, otherwise you settle for the ugly genus at the watering hole, just like people do.

But it turns out crayfish are pretty good poker players.

Female crayfish were honest about displaying their prize physical 
assets - their claws - while males routinely overstated their case.  

Not that this has any parallels in humans - we men never overstate our incomes, for example ( unless wearing a tuxedo counts) but it's a good idea to read the article, just in case.
