For a long time scientists believed that the domestication of the dog started either in the West (probably because of the proliferation of various dog breeds) or in the Middle East on the basis that the domestication of several other species of animal originated there! Another factor that tended to support those two regions was that the best archeological evidence put the earliest dog domestication occurrences in Israel and Germany. However more recently researchers conducted a novel approach which entailed collecgting dog dna samples from across the globe and cross-matching them to determine the region that boasts the greatest genetic diversity. The region with the greatest genetic variation would be the likely spot for the origin of dog domestication...and ironically the most likely region also happens to be the one place that banned dogs on the grounds that they were an affectation of the bourgeoisie!
