DAYTONA BEACH - State and local investigators Friday were sorting out how three greyhounds died after the dead dogs were found in a cooler at a Daytona Beach racing kennel this week.

The investigation into Nelson Ulrich's BreadWinner Kennels was launched when regulators from the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation showed up Wednesday to suspend Ulrich for having hounds that tested positive for trace amounts of cocaine in random tests earlier this year.

The dogs found in the cooler are not the same animals that showed drugs in their system but may have been dead for at least a day.

"It does make you wonder, why the dogs were there dead for a period," said Dave Byron, spokesman for Volusia County's Animal Control Services, which is leading the probe.
