The incident has sparked outrage in Israeli soceity. Sociologists are attempting to explain the actions of the public.
Dr Gustavo Mesch, a senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Haifa, said he was not surprised that nobody stopped to help.
People in Israeli society tend to depend on each other. When there are others around, "we see them as responsible, not us," said Mesch.
Another reason, according to Mesch was that "in the past, we used to interfere in every aspect of other people's lives. In recent years, however, Israeli society is undergoing a shift from a collective society that cares for all, to an individualist society."
