Segways, the popular two-wheeler personal transportation vehicle is banned for now in the Netherlands, so people can only ride them on their private property.  Although it is considered a vehicle, the Dutch cannot license it under current transportation law.

"This is definitely not the end of the Segway in the Netherlands," said Hans de Jong, a distributor.

This policy is likely to be reviewed soon. It is plausible that in the EU a unform approach will emerge to the handling of Segway driver rights. In Italy the Ministry of Transportation issued a temporary ruling that allows the Segway and its rider to be equivalent to a pedestrian. This means that one can drive on walkways, or as we did in supermarkets, as long as all the rules are respected as a pedestrian would, for example crossing the road on the stripes, etc. I have posted stories on my blog about my adventures with the Segway in Italy.

It is interesting to hear about this move. These vehicles have not been launched in India - my country, but other electric personal transport vehicles like cars and bikes have been launched. The segway is an interesting concept, and banning these will definately not help in actually promoting more such alternate and eco friendly transport systems.
