e-Waste Disposal Service Soon!
Wipro has announced that it will be offering an e-waste disposal service to its customers, starting September 1 this year. The company says the service will be accessible at no extra cost beyond nominal freight charges.

According to reports, organizations such as Greenpeace have been raising the issue of disposal of scrapped computers by owners/users of computers and other electronics goods. Wipro considers this a larger issue, involving all users and owners of computers, the entire installed base of computers, and all vendors and manufacturers in the country.
The company believes that IT is a progressive industry, and that players around-the-world are campaigning to generate end-user-awareness, as also influence legislation, to ensure appropriate disposal of waste by end users. Likewise, the Indian industry, under the guidance of the Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), is actively promoting end-user-awareness and has reportedly submitted a draft legislation on the matter.
Ashutosh Vaidya, vice president - personal computing division, Wipro, said that Wipro has been actively working on the issue since August 2005. Vaidya said the company has set up an environment management team, to lead Wipro's initiatives on this front. He said that the team has, over the last one year, defined the process, identified suitable disposal mechanisms, created service points across-the-country, identified technically competent disposal agencies, and set-up a process for disposal of e-waste.
Vaidya added that Wipro is voluntarily driving efforts to maximize the usage of RoHS-compliant components. He said that the present company outlook would help them offer RoHS-compliant electronic components by the middle of next year.
