Today, Emily Carr becomes the first Canadian art college to sign the international Talloires Declaration . The declaration is a commitment by institutes of higher learning to a ten point action plan for becoming environmentally sound places of teaching and learning. The official ceremony takes place today on the Granville Island campus in conjunction with Field Notes, On Sustainability, an exhibition by first year students.

So what does this really mean? Well, the school has struck a sustainability working group made up of students, faculty and staff. And sustainability was a theme for new students' in their first term coursework. It may seem like small steps, but signing the Talloires Declaration is what started UBC on the road to being a leader in campus sustainability.
