NP Rank:
Eco Running
I am not talking about the eco-challenge and you technically don't
even need to be running. I have recently discovered a simple and
wonderful idea (the simple ones usually are.) A 26-year old named Sam
Huber from Milwaukee, Wisconsin has a deep passion for running. He runs
on trails, streets, beaches, wherever he can. Sam came to the
realization that running 60-90 miles a week in preparation for his next
marathon or event could be considered self-indulgent. He decided that
he could use that time to also give back to the environment that so
often inspired his activities. The "eco-running" movement was born.
Although it can placed in philosophical, social and political
discussions, here is the basic principle: the next time you go for a
walk or a run, take a bag with you. When you find garbage on the trail,
beach or road, pick it up, put it in the bag and keep going. By the end
of your walk or run you will have made the world a prettier and cleaner
place.
The size of the bag, whether or not it's biodegradable, whether you
do it during events, these are decisions that are up to you. The point
is you are doing something. It may seem small, but the next time I go
to the beach or park and I don't see litter, I'll give a silent thanks
to the eco-runners out there.
