NP Rank:
Ecumenism's goal; "the visible unity of the Church"
The CNA report on the Roman Pontiff's address yesterday to the plenary meeting of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity notes that the Holy Father admonished the participants in the meeting that "the aim of the ecumenical movement remains unchanged: the visible unity of the Church".
Zenit reports what appears to be the same passage of the Pope's allocution differently:
Benedict XVI mentioned the first message he wrote as Pope, dated April 20, 2005, in which he assumed "as a primary commitment to work without sparing energies for the reconstitution of the full and visible unity of all the followers of Christ.
In any event, the reminder by his Holiness that the authentic purpose of ecumenical conversation entails work toward "full and visible unity" is welcome, except perhaps by those whose 'idea' of 'church' is represented by choruses of Kumbaya, prayer mats and Saturday afternoons at the nearest political rally.
