One supposes that this is not a good way to become President of the USA: as of my last visit, SUVs (aka "mall crawlers") were everywhere to be seen.
Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards today said he would ask Americans to give up their SUVs, as he set out his plans to curb carbon emissions.
At a forum held by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Florida, Mr Edwards said he believe Americans were "actually willing to sacrifice".
He said "one of the things they should be asked to do is drive more fuel efficient vehicles." When asked if this meant telling voters to give up their SUVs the former senator said "yes".
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group that he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.

Yeah, that was a bold thing to say. Probably not the best thing to way to become president. I live in Canada now, and every time I go down to the U.S., I'm surprised at how many more SUVs I see south of the border. It's crazy...... People like their giant vehicles, because they think they are "safer" (which we all know not to be true if you see any unbiased reports).
