Eight-month-old baby dies in fire

An eight-month-old baby has died after a fire broke out in a terraced house.

The child was in an upstairs bedroom of the property at Lees in Oldham, Greater Manchester, when the blaze started at around 1800 BST.

A 15-year-old girl - one of seven adults and children who managed to escape - broke her ankle.

Fire crews, who arrived within four minutes of being called out, found the body. The infant, whose sex has not been revealed, suffered severe burns.

Joint investigation

A firefighter also suffered burns during the blaze as he attempted to rescue the baby. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 1808 and the first fire engine was on the scene at 1812.

"We were immediately informed there was a baby inside and crews were sent in straight away, and discovered a body in an upstairs room.

"A joint fire, police and forensic science service investigation will now take place to investigate the cause."
