An earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude has hit the south island of New Zealand, news is coming in slowly as the earthquake occurred at 01.29 local time. Police are saying the quake was widely felt but have not had any reports of damage or injuries. I will update this news if the situation changes and as I get more information.

There have not been any large or moderate aftershocks yet, if there are any they will show on this feed.

A magnitude-7.4 quake struck near New Zealand's Auckland Islands on Sept. 30. The country has as many as 15,000 earthquakes a year. The biggest since instrumental recording began was a magnitude-7.8 temblor in 1931 in Hawke's Bay, according to the USGS Web site.

Police on south island said the quake had been widely felt, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

vinny1, good stuff. Any fears of a tidal wave?

Hi PEP no tsunami warnings have been issued, looking at the maps it looks like the earthquake was on land.

Thanks Tom and earlydaze the 10.30 one is the one I have reported as a 6.0 on the story the source I use only shows them if they are 4 and above so I don't get all the smaller aftershocks.
