A leaky fridge has been blamed for the evacuation of a hotel in Marlborough.

Fire crews and police were called to the Ivy House Hotel in the centre of the Wiltshire town just after 0830 GMT.

Guests and staff were taken from the building after what was at first thought to be a chemical leak was discovered.

Fire crews searching the building found the leaky fridge in the hotel's
basement. The hotel was evacuated and the main high street was closed.

Police said the incident had been dealt with and the high street would be reopened to traffic shortly.

Manager Judy Cameron said: "We came in and we could smell what we thought was ammonia.

"Subsequently, we [had] something like six fire appliances, two
ambulances, a chemical response team and men in yellow suits with green
Wellington boots on here."
